“Donning her fins and snorkel, she headed out into the deep water.”

Her heart raced with anticipation. As she thrust her body forward, she felt a lump in her throat. Had she missed it? It was just there, so where did it go?

“It was just 100 yards to the North,” declared Roman. “Go deeper, now! We can’t give up!”

A tall sturdy man, he was once her college professor and mentor. Now she calls him a colleague as they spend their professional and personal lives researching rare and almost extinct oceanic species.

She had written about this species in her dissertation. She knew how important it would be to find and study this creature as it has eluded so many for so long. In fact, Roman had let it slip away twice. This was on her mind and his too.

She dove further down into the ocean, as her eyesight adjusted to the darkness. It was all up to her now.
